    ~*Flashback as kids*~

“But Emil I’m scared.” You whined standing on the stone wall looking down at the ground where your best friend, Emil, stood.

“Just jump, ______. I’ll be right here. I’ll catch you.” The two of you were walking home from school and decided to take a short cut that involved jumping off a four foot wall which looked much higher being on top looking down. “I’m here for you I promise.”

You looked at him as you slowly sat on the wall. You shut your (e/c) eyes as you slide off the wall letting out a small scream landing in your friend’s arms.

“See?” You heard Emil’s voice as you opened your eyes. “It wasn’t that bad was it?”

    ~*End of Flashback*~

Those were better days. When you didn’t worry about walking into school and being picked on for something that was different about you or how you thought about everything. You were always to feel like the dirt on the bottom of the popular kids’ shoes as they stepped all over you calling you names and teasing you. All you did now was walk to school, stay at school until the last bell of the day and walk back home to do homework and cry under your covers.

You saw Emil a few times a week if you were lucky but that was only passing in the halls to say hi and good-bye. You felt like you lost him. For good. You didn’t care. He seemed happy hanging out with the friends he has and his older brother. You were happy for him. At least that what you told yourself.

You were on your way home walking the same path you did every day after school. You sighed as you walked near the old bridge that stood far above the rushing river below it. You always told yourself every time you passed that bridge ‘I’m going to jump from it one day. That’s how I’ll go. If the fall doesn’t kill me the river below will bring me under not letting me breath any oxygen will surly do it.’ But you never had the courage to do more than that. Think.

Not today. You were going to do it. You were tired of the bullying and teasing. All you wanted to do is make it stop. Instead of walking under the bridge like you normally do you walked up the hill leading to the bridge. The cold wind blew through your (h/c) hair as you reached the top. You stood at the railing looking down as you set your bag to the side and climbed over onto the ledge. You held onto the railing looking down as you breathed in and then out. All there was to do now was let go. You shut your eyes tight feeling the wind pick up.

“Hey.” You heard a soft voice as you opened your eyes again looking over seeing Emil leaning on the rail. “What are you doing?” He calmly asked.

“Ending it all.” You told him as you turned back to the river. “I can’t take it anymore.” A tear ran down your face. “Why are you here? Your house is on the other side of town.”

“Something told me to come this way today.” Emil said looking at the water below. The water looks cold.”

“Hopefully it will do the job.” You said as you looked at Emil taking his brown jacket off. “What are you doing now?”

“Well if you’re going to jump I don’t want to get my jacket wet when I jump in after you.” He said hanging his jacket over the railing as he climbed over the rail to your side. “Plus I have to keep it dry so you can have something dry to wear.”

    “You’re nuts.”

“Says the girl about to jump into the freezing river below.” Emil said looking at you as you didn’t answer. “I’m sure whatever you’re going through can be handled.”

“You don’t hear them, Emil.” You said as your voice cracked. “I’ve been listening to it for years.” Tears fell down your face. “I’ve tried to talk about it but no one ever listens. Not the counselor. Not my parents. Not the little friends I have. I have no one.”

“You have me.” Emil said looking at you as you still looked at the river. He sighed looking out over the small town in the distance. “______? Do you remember when we were kids and we would walk home together?” You looked up as he asked this. “Do you remember what I promised you when you were scared to jump off that wall?” You looked away thinking as it was so long ago.

“I don’t know.” You whispered barely hearable.

“I promised that I would be there for you.” He looked at you. “And I didn’t just mean that for that day.” He reached over holding your right hand with his left hand entwining his fingers with yours. “I’m sorry I haven’t been able to physically be there for you, ______, but it doesn’t mean I stopped caring.” The tears in your eyes fell as you moved your eyes from your hands to his eyes. “Come on. Let’s get off this ledge.” He said without letting go of your hand he climbed over the rail and helped you over. As soon as you were over the other side you fell into his arms crying. He held you close in his arms rubbing your back as you let it all out.

From that day on he never broke his promise and he was always there with you physically and mentally even after you both became more then friends.
