‘What is that sound?’ You thought as all you saw was darkness. ‘Is that a heart monitor?’ A pain in your side reminded you what went on and answered your question.

    -Flashback-

“That had to be the best movie we’ve seen yet!” Your boyfriend, Alfred, said as you both walked out of the theater walking down the sidewalk headed home.

“You saw that about every movie we see.” You giggled holding on to his arm as you walked.

“We see good movies.” He laughed that laugh you loved to hear. When the two of you turned a corner you were both met with a gun pointed at the both of you.

“Give me your money and no one gets hurt.” The man holding the gun told you as you looked at him in fear. “Did I stutter? Give the bag lady!”

“Don’t talk to her like that.” Alfred told him throwing a punch at the guy sending him stumbling back a bit before he pointed the gun towards Alfred. Alfred grabbed his wrist trying to get the gun out of his hand while keeping it pointed away from where you stood. He slammed the man against the brick wall hitting the man’s head hard on the brick as the shattering gun shot was heard. That’s when you felt it. The pain in the left side of your midsection. Your hands automatically flew to the pain. You slowly took one off and raised it to your face looking at the red that painted your palm. Your vision started to fade as you felt light headed and unable to stand on your own two feet.

“Al…fred…” You fell to your knees before falling to your side holding the wound. The last thing your eyes met was Alfred rushing to your side calling your name putting pressure on your side to stop the bleeding. Your vision faded with the last thing you saw was the fear in his blue eyes.

    -end of flashback-

‘Oh right I was shot.’ You thought finally opening your eyes to the white room. You took in your surroundings when you felt something on your right hand. You looked seeing the sandy blond hair of a certain American that you loved so much. He was sleeping with his arms folded under his head and by the look of it he wasn’t planning on sleeping being he still had his glasses on. You slide your hand out from his grip as softly stroke his soft hair. He stirs in his sleep as he sat up blinking his eyes.

“______!” He exclaimed. “You’re awake!” His eyes that held so much life looked dark as if he hadn’t slept for days.

“H-how long have I been here?” You asked afraid of the answer.

“About four days now.” He held your hand looking into you (e/c) eyes. “How are you feeling?”

“Painful.” You told him lightly squeezing his hand. “How did I get shot if the gun was pointed the other way?”

“The off chance it ricocheted of a light post.” He told you as you looked at the ceiling.

“What luck.” You slightly smiled at him. “When do I get to get out of here?”

“The doctor said that after you woke up he wanted to do some tests and if everything checks out he said that you could leave as soon as a couple hours after waking up.” He stood up kissing your forehead. “I’ll go get him.”

“Alfred?” You called him before he left. “How long have you been here?”

“The whole time.” He smiled. “The only time I left was to wash up in the sink.” This made you laughed imagining Alfred bathing himself in the sink in the bathroom in your hospital room.

While Alfred went off looking for your doctor  your eyes move to the vase that sat one your side table filled with (your favorite flowers) you slowly reached up taking the card and read it.

‘______, hope you get to feeling better soon and hope to see your smile again soon. Love Arthur, Matthew and Francis.’

You smiled thinking of Alfred’s three brothers. A few minutes later Alfred came back with your doctor who soon gave you the good news that you were able to go home.

You were left to get dressed on your own as you sat on your bed sliding your shirt on after putting your pants on under your gown and removed it. You heard a knock as you got up and slowly made your way to the door finding Alfred with a wheelchair.

“Babe you could have told me I could come in.” He said as he rolled the chair in.

“I don’t have to leave in that do I?” You asked as he nodded.

“Doctor’s orders.” He smiled. “If it was up to me I would scoop you up and walk right out those doors.” You giggled while he held the chair for you and you sat down. He walked over taking the vase of (favorite flowers) and set it in your lap while he pushed you. “The doctor gave me your pain killers for later.”

“Yay.” You smiled as he pushed you down the hall toward the double doors leading outside.

The ride to the house you both shared was fine except for the random shots of pain that came and went. Every time you would cringed a look of worry and concern would cover Alfred’s face as he looked at you. You guys pulled into your driveway when Alfred put the car in park and rushed to the other side to open your door.

“Alfred, you know I’m fine.” You said stepping out of the car as you stopped feeling another pain in your side.

“Not when you keep making that face.” Alfred knew you were in pain as he helped you into the door.

“Welcome home, ______.” You heard the voice of Alfred’s brother, Arthur, say as you walked in the door. You smiled at him seeing his smile greeting you.

“Thanks, Arthur.” You said while Alfred helped you sit on the couch.

“How are you feeling?” Arthur asked sitting next to you as you smiled.

“A lot better I did a few nights ago.” You looked at him. “Oh and thank you for the (favorite flower). They were just lovely.”

“It was no trouble.” Arthur patted your knee. “I’m just glad to see you out.”

“Hey,” Alfred said scratching the back of his head. “I’m going to go get your flowers and stuff out of the car.”  He smiled as he walked out of the door.

“So why are you here?” You asked Arthur. “I’m sure you’re not here just to welcome me home.”

“If I knew you were coming home today I would have.” Arthur said looking into your (e/c) eyes. “When you were put into the hospital Alfred asked me to come by a couple times a day to check on Hamburgers.”

Hamburgers was the yellow and brown cat that you and Alfred had. As if on cue the large loveable cat jumped into your lap rubbing up against you as if to welcome you home himself. You scratched him behind the ear smiling at the feline. You turned the TV on watching a show that you flipped to. After a while the front door reopened and Alfred walked in.

“That took a while.” Arthur said looking at his brother.

“I was checking stuff on my phone.” Alfred said setting your vase on the coffee table as Arthur rolled his eyes and looked at his watch.

“Well I’m going to let you get your rest, ______. Glad to see you’re alright and get better soon.” You hugged him from your spot as he stood.

“Alright Arthur thanks again and tell Francis and Matthew thank you as well.”

“Yes, I’ve got to see that bloody frog tonight and I believe Matthew will be there so I’ll pass the message along.” He said goodbye to his brother before going.

“You did take a while out there.” You looked at Alfred as he sat down.

“I had a lot of unread e-mails I had to go through, babe.” He told you as you nodded and rested your head on his shoulder.

Throughout the day you noticed that wasn’t the only thing he did that took a bit longer than it should have. He found out that you were out of milk and went to go get some from the store just down the street. He got back and said he had to go to the one a couple miles down being the other place was out.

He couldn’t find a pen to write with and when you told him you had on your nightstand he just said it was fine he’ll find one in the basement office.

He made several trips to the store to get stuff you guys were out of and would come back for a while and find something else you guys needed.

This went on for a couple days until you sat on the couch with Alfred petting Hamburgers on your lap.

“What do you feel like for dinner, babe?” Alfred asked as you thought.

“I don’t know. Are you going out?” You looked up at him as he nodded.

“Yeah I don’t feel like cooking.”

“Then you can get me a surprise.” You smiled at him. “You know what I like.” He kissed you as he walked out to his car. Your eyes went back to the TV and before long your eyes grew heavy as you fell asleep.

You awoke to a dark room with the TV and the lights all out. You started to sit up feeling a blanket over you and purring fur ball of a cat next to you. You cringed as the pain returned to your side as you pushed yourself up.

“Alfred?” You looked around slowly standing up. “What time is it?” You asked out loud walking down the hall towards the shared bedroom when you stopped. What was that sound? Was it…crying? You gently turned the knob to your bedroom and slowly opened it to see Alfred sitting on your bed with his legs over the side and his body slumped over with his hands in his hands.

“Alfred?” You softly spoke seeing your boyfriend crying. His head shot up looking at you as you reached over turning on his side table lamp.

“I...thought you were asleep.” He said wiping his eyes.

“I was.” You said sitting next to him. “Alfred what’s wrong?” You put your hand on his knee looking at him.

He sighed shaking his head. “I was so scared of losing you that night.”  He said just above a whisper.

“But you didn’t lose me.” You looked at him.

“I should have protected you better. You got hurt because of something I did.” He turned his head looking at you with tears in his blue eyes. “When you were in the hospital all I wanted to see was your eyes opening and you to look at me and show me you were alright.”

“But you see I’m fine now.” You told him as he nodded.

“Yeah but,” He sighed again. “Everything thing you do just makes me think of how much I would have missed that if you were gone. Your smile. Your laugh. I mean when I got you home the way you get along with Arthur,”

“Wait, is that why it took you a while to get the stuff from the car?” you asked even if you didn’t him you out right tell you it was. His look said it all. “Alfred, I’m not going anywhere and I could have been hurt a lot worst if you didn’t do something.” You wiped a fallen tear with your thumb. “Plus there is no need to hide your crying from me.”

“But heroes don’t cry, ______” He chocked as another tear fell.

“Mine does.” You told him leaning in kissing him tenderly on the lips as he was shocked at your action before he relaxed into it holding you close as he never wanted to let you go again.
